June 28th, 2009: Experiments

When all else fails: Rodinal.

I had a roll of random bulk rolled film, sitting in an Adox 100 film cartridge. I knew it wasnt Adox 100 because I’d helpfully written “NOT ADOX 100″ on it in sharpie.
Yes well, that helps loads.

Anyway, judging by how thin the base felt, I assumed it was some of that Kodak Hawkeye Surveillance film I’d had for some time. It’s on a polyester base instead of acetate, so it feels thinner. With this bit of science in mind, and not a clue when I’d shot it or at what speed, I dunked it in some Rodinal 1+100 and let it stand for an hour.

The results are contrasty, in the words of Stephen, our lovely tech officer at uni, “Jesus, you’ll need grade double zero for that”. They are also fairly grainy, as you can see in the crop. I’m a fan of grain. I assume I shot it at 500EI, intending to develop it in D-76 by the Kodak Tech Document’s specifications.

So what have we learned today?
-Rodinal is always lovely
-I’m rubbish at keeping notes
-Never throw away a roll of film, there might be something brilliant on it
